4 suspects attack, rob man at 3rd & Pine bus stop

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Saturday, October 31st, 11:05am

A man waiting for a bus a couple of blocks from Pike Place Market was attacked and robbed by four men Friday night.

Police said the man was waiting for the bus at 3rd Avenue and Pine Street at about 11:35 p.m. when two men approached the victim and asked him for money.

The two men then began to assault the victim, and two more suspects joined in the assault. During the attack, one of the suspects took the victim's wallet.

The victim received some injuries in the attack.

About an hour and a half later, the victim called back to 911 to report that at least two of his attackers were back in the area of 3rd Avenue and Pine Street.

Police arrived and took the 19-year-old suspects into custody after they were positively identified by the victim. They were later booked into the King County Jail.

Tremor trigger would shut down Seattle viaduct

Submitted by Associated Press on Thursday, October 29th, 03:22pm

The state Transportation Department is designing a system that would automatically close entrances to Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct at the start of an earthquake. KOMO photographer Scott Hopson took this video of the viaduct today.

Ground motion detectors and other equipment would trigger gates and signs to detour traffic away from the elevated section of Highway 99 along the downtown waterfront.

The Daily Journal of Commerce reports federal money is helping pay for the project that will cost $5 million to $10 million and be in operation by the middle of next year.

The state and city are working on a longer-range $4.2 billion plan to replace the viaduct with a tunnel.

The 56-year-old viaduct that carries about 100,000 vehicles a day was damaged by the 2001 Nisqually earthquake.

Steel porker packs it in for winter

Submitted by Julien Perry on Wednesday, October 28th, 03:10pm

Maximus/Minimus, Seattle's favorite urban assault pig, is going into hibernation for the winter.

Owner Kurt Dammeier says his mobile pulled pork sandwich truck will stay permanently parked for the winter starting October 31st.

“We’ll be back on April 1, 2010, and that is no April Fools,” he says. “The weather forecast for this winter in Seattle says rain and cold, not the kind of habitat mobile pigs are accustomed to.”

Dammeier says discussions are underway as to what the porker should look like next year.

"Our vegan sandwich has been such a hit that some of us say we should reshape the truck into a grain of barley. Other people in my office are pushing for a variety of barnyard animals, with a chicken or sheep being the early leading contenders."
