After 20-years, First Church opens new building on Denny Way

Submitted by Marlee Ginter on Sunday, January 31st, 06:38pm

A church plagued by court rulings and lawsuits finally re-opened in a new multimillion-dollar facility in downtown Seattle on Sunday.

First United Methodist Church was on the brink of being broke, but the congregation pulled together to keep going - even when the going was so tough it looked impossible.

Church members celebrated their victory Sunday with a march to the new building. Although the march was short, the road to get there took more than two decades.

"We've had court battles, earthquakes and controversies inside and outside of the church," says the Rev. Sanford Brown.

Members of First Church finally walked into a fresh new facility after struggling to get out of a decaying, old earthquake-damaged building preservationists didn't want destroyed.

Now, after landing a developer willing to save the old building, members used the proceeds from the sale to build a new downtown facility.

"It has been a great hardship and we were not at all sure. I didn't think we would ever make it," says retired minister Paul Beeman.

Get ready for construction on Olive Way through March

Submitted by Ray Marcham on Sunday, January 31st, 01:32pm

Traffic is going to get interesting beginning on Monday, as the stretch of Olive Way between 5th and 6th will start seeing construction for the next month.

Crews will reduce Olive Way to two lanes from four during the construction.  Parking and loading zones will be restricted, and the bus stop at 6th and Olive, served by Metro, Sound Transit and Community Transit, will be closed.  But the sidewalks will still be open.

The construction is supposed to be done by the beginning of March.

Teamsters threaten to strike at Pike Place Market

Submitted by Ray Marcham on Saturday, January 30th, 11:06am

Is there a strike looming over Pike Place Market?

According to Teamsters Local 117, there is.  The union put out a press release on Friday saying that the workers they represent at the market, including parking attendants, maintenance workers, housing managers, janitors and security staff, voted "in overwhelming numbers" to authorize a strike.

The Seattle Times reports that a mediation session between the union and the Public Development Authority will take place on Monday.

Among the main issues at the bargaining table, according to the Teamsters, include a proposed merit pay system, reclassification of works, restoration of holiday pay.

Last chance to see Michelangelo exhibit

Submitted by Heather Reese on Friday, January 29th, 12:42pm

This weekend is your last chance to see Michelangelo Public and Private at the Seattle Art Museum.

The rare collection of drawings and sculptural models were never intended to be seen by the public. Michelangelo burned most of his sketches before he died, so nobody would see how he prepared for his well-known pieces.

The SAM will stay open until 9 p.m. every day through Sunday to give you ample opportunity to catch the exhibit.

ROCK the Hard Rock

Submitted by Heather Reese on Thursday, January 28th, 04:00pm

The new Hard Rock Cafe Seattle is looking for local talent.

If you've got a band - or you play solo - submit some material for one of these future opportunities:

Nightly Live Music
Hard Rock Seattle's venue will host live music three to four nights per week, with a focus on weekends.

Monthly Residency Program
Tuesday nights will play host to something Seattle hasn't seen in a while…monthly residencies. Artists will play shows at Hard Rock every Tuesday for a month.

All Ages Sunday Matinee Shows
Sunday afternoons at Hard Rock will cater to rockers of all ages.  Parents will be able to bring their families and young adults under 21 can enjoy music in an authentic rock 'n' roll environment.

Contact Amy Bauer at amy_bauer@hardrock.com to submit your music.

There's no absolute word when the new restaurant on 116 Pike Street will open. But by the looks of the Kurt Cobain-inspired guitar that was put up on the building on Tuesday - we're getting closer!
