911, Crime

A suspected drunk driver caused a crash early Monday that killed his passenger and injured a construction worker on Interstate 5.

State troopers said the driver, Shane Gram, was southbound on I-5 just after midnight when he lost control of his car and slammed into the back of a truck that was parked at a Department of Transportation construction site near the interchange with I-90.

Damien Mendenhall, 25, who was in the passenger seat of the car died at the scene. Police say Mendenhall was not wearing his seat belt.

A member of the construction crew who was in the DOT truck was taken to Harborview Medical Center to be checked out for minor injuries.

Gram, 23, was also taken to Harborview. He was released from the hospital Monday and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of involuntary manslaughter.
